Technology Standards Programs and Resources
Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Standards
ITS standards are industry-consensus standards that define how system components operate within a consistent framework. This framework is known as the National ITS Architecture.
Justice Standards Clearinghouse
The Justice Standards Clearinghouse is a repository of standards and specifications that help practitioners increase the nation's safety. Information on this topic and additional Department of Justice initiatives can be viewed here.

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Joint Program Office (JPO)
The ITS Joint Program Office is responsible for coordinating U.S. Department of Transportation multimodal ITS initiatives. The ITS JPO supports a variety of activities and programs across all modes and manages deployment support functions, such as Web site development and maintenance, outreach, program evaluation, training and the architecture and standards programs. Additional information on Intelligent Transportation Systems is available here.
Research and Innovative Technology Administration
The Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA) coordinates the U.S. Department of Transportation's (DOT) research programs and is charged with advancing the deployment of cross-cutting technologies to improve our Nation’s transportation system. As directed by Congress in its founding legislation, RITA leads DOT in:
- Coordinating, facilitating and reviewing the Department’s research and development programs and activities;
- Advancing innovative technologies, including intelligent transportation systems;
- Performing comprehensive transportation statistics research, analysis and reporting; and
- Providing education and training in transportation and transportation-related fields.
RITA brings together important data, research and technology transfer assets of the Department of Transportation, including:
- Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS)
- Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)
- National Transportation Library (NTL)
- Research, Development and Technology (RD&T)
- Transportation Safety Institute (TSI)
- University Transportation Centers (UTCs)
- Volpe National Transportation Systems Center (Volpe)
RITA also provides strategic direction and oversight of DOT’s Intelligent Transportation Systems Program.
Institute of Transportation Engineer (ITE)
The Institute of Transportation Engineers is an international educational and scientific association of transportation professionals who are responsible for meeting mobility and safety needs. ITE facilitates the application of technology and scientific principles to research, planning, functional design, implementation, operation, policy development and management for any mode of transportation.
GJXDM/IEEE 1512 Compatibility Analysis Report
The IJIS Institute recently released a compatibility analysis study of the Department of Justice's (DOJ's) Global Justice XML Data Model and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 1512 report, with the goal of developing information exchange standards that incorporate both GJXDM and IEEE specifications.
